How to fix launching of programs when a virus hits

Viruses and malware can wreak havoc on your computer. Even once the virus has been removed, the damage may still need to be cleaned up, kind of like when you come down a with a real sickness! In one situation I came across recently, a client’s computer was no longer able to launch any programs after the virus was successfully removed. Every time a program was started, a message came up asking which program to use to open it. After doing some searching, I came across http://www.dougknox.com/. This site contains many valuable tips, but the one I refer you to today is Windows XP File Association Fixes. I used the .EXE file association fix located on this page to restore the ability to launch .EXE programs which are the files used when you run a program. Once this fix was put in place, the client was back up and running. This required the import of a registry file. The site explains how to do this and I may go further into detail on this in a future blog post.
